Understanding Iguanas

Iguanas are herbivorous lizards native to the tropical areas of Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. While iguanas are popular pets, they have also been introduced to the wildlife in the Florida peninsula and have rapidly made themselves at home.

To reproduce, iguanas dig burrows in the ground, reaching up to 70 feet long. These burrows serve as nesting sites for iguanas during breeding season, which typically occurs in the spring when temperatures get warmer. Iguanas lay anywhere from 20 to 70 eggs a year! This high number of eggs and the lack of natural predators in Florida means that there are a lot of iguanas. And they can be quite a nuisance.

Iguanas can cause problems such as:

  • Spreading disease through their feces
  • Biting when feeling threatened
  • Damaging fields of crops and gardens
  • Delaying commercial flights at airports
  • Causing power outages
  • Damaging the structure of your home, including roofs and sea walls

While iguanas seem like mostly harmless creatures, the damage they do due to their large numbers is truly stunning. Don’t wait to address your iguana problems. The team at 4-Evergone can help you make sure that your iguana problems are no longer at the forefront of your mind.
